Herbs and Adaptogens 101

January 24, 2019

If you’re in tune at all with the health and wellness scene you’ve probably heard the word “adaptogens” getting thrown around. But the fact is, adaptogens are more than a buzz word or term used for marketing. There is progress to be made before adaptogens become fully mainstream but at their root (no pun intended) they are non-toxic plants that help the body resist the stress of all kinds.

How did all of this start?

While it may feel like adaptogens just popped onto the scene, they have in fact been used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. There’s a reason they’ve had such staying power – studies have shown that adaptogens offer plenty of positive effects.

What do they actually do?

These herbs and foods adapt to what our bodies need and protect against various stressors. If you’re a human in modern society, you know what we mean by “stressors”. From work and navigating relationships to environmental factors and pollution, our bodies are under stress a lot of the time. Adaptogens support the body’s adrenal glands, reduce stress levels and regulate hormone responses for an overall sense of balance.

Is cannabis an adaptogen?

Cannabis and its derivatives like CBD are non-toxic, stress-reducing and have a balancing effect on the body which are the qualifiers of being an adaptogen. It might not have the official designation, but considering CBD’s ability to increase our capacity for stress while working towards the ultimate goal of homeostasis we believe that it makes the cut!

How can I use them?

Adaptogens can be incorporated into more than a Pinterest-worthy layered smoothie. The opportunities to get your adaptogens in are pretty varied – from tinctures to powders and pills…and even gummies? Though be sure you’re checking in on the quality and sources companies are using – not every product is created equal.

Which should I try?

Luckily for us, adaptogens follow the Hippocratic oath – do no harm. Adaptogens are nontoxic and considered to be generally safe. But, if you are under the care of a physician for existing medical conditions, then we recommend speaking with your physician before adding anything new into your treatment program.

While they all help the body become balanced, some work better for certain things. Here are a few of our favorite herbs and adaptogens for balance and stress relief.

Ashwagandha

If you’ve been in the adaptogen game at all, you’ve probably heard about Ashwagandha. It is most well known for its restorative and rejuvenating benefits and it’s a great choice for when “you’re exhausted but find you can’t relax.” *Hands Raised* It has been proven to lower cortisol levels, which is essential for getting your mind and body to focus on thriving rather than simply surviving.

Black seed oil

Hailing from southwest Asia, Black Seed Oil (also known as black cumin) is used to boost the immune system, stave off infection and reduce inflammation. It is a powerful antioxidant and is amazing for reducing blood sugar and supporting liver health.

Cordyceps

Maybe don’t research what cordyceps is if you’re easily weirded out. But trust us when we say, this powerhouse ingredient can help you boost your stamina, slow down aging and reduce inflammation.

Lemon Balm

Not only does this little guy smell amazing, but it’s also known for its anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties. . It not only falls into the category of nervous system relaxant, but it is also considered a nervine tonic (adaptogen) for it’s ability to modulate the whole body’s response to stress

Passionflower

We love passionflower for its ability to aid insomnia, stomach issues and of course, anxiety.

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane are fungi that have long, shaggy spines and a penchant for improving your cognitive and heart health among other benefits.

What else should I know?

Adaptogens are meant to be taken on a daily basis over time. It’s easy to want a quick fix, but it’s important to know that adaptogens have the best effect with regular, long-term use.

Luckily our products pack a mean adaptogen punch so you can soak up all the good they have to offer!
